Focusing exclusively on North American white cedar and using every part of each tree, True North Cedar has emerged as a leader in producing environmentally friendly, value-added wood products.

True North Cedar utilizes mature white cedar from forests in Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the northern Lake Superior region of Ontario.

Discriminating homeowners, architects and contractors have selected white cedar shingles, house logs, siding, decking, and lumber for centuries, admiring its beauty, durability and weather resistance. True North Cedar’s products are perfect for any project seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Lean, and Clean and Green
How does True North Cedar work to protect our environment?

True North Cedar is dedicated to giving our children and our grandchildren a part of the planet that has been preserved and protected as much as possible.

Owners Max Taubert and Hobart Finn are committed to walk the walk of environmental responsibility. But, here’s the deal….

These guys are loggers, and miners of the industrial forest. They are not environmental scientists. Neither of them ever really even liked school much, but they read a lot, and listen a lot, and they are willing to take some good advice most of the time. So please let Max or Hobart know if you have any good ideas on how they can be more green (and stay open for business)! E-mail the guys at Hobart@truenorthcedar.com or Max@truenorthcedar.com. They really would welcome your thoughts.

Here’s what True North is doing now to try to insure that the product leaves a gentle footprint:

* Renewable Forests – Cedar forests in Minnesota renew in 40-65 years
* Used Equipment – Whenever possible, True North buys and re-tools used equipment, which sometimes saves costs, and sometimes doesn’t work out so great that way. It always saves waste, however.
* We recycle – All pallets are recycled and reincarnated and used again.
* Our raw material is someone else’s waste – True North products are sawn from stumps, which are left in the field after much commercial logging.
* We Make Mulch – True North uses all tree harvest waste to make our great garden and landscape mulch.
* LEED Certificate Opportunities – Hooray! It’s true! True North does offer a specialty shingle compliant with LEED Certification. (It’s a bit more expensive – but it makes a statement.) Our LEED compliant shingle is made exclusively from utility poles, bridge pilings, and old timber.
* Off Peak Power – True North uses it.
* Concentrated use of raw product – True North is particularly proud of our re-tooled two-man saw. The guys reworked it from a one-man saw, which enables True North to get more products from less logs. Of course, this saves you lots of money, too!

Remember, True North is open to more suggestions! We would like to be better global citizens, honest!

Talked to Hobart on the phone about ordering some cedar posts for an upcoming project. He's an excellent guy with his head in the right place. It is a rarity these days to call a company and have a thorough conversation with the company owner. My personal belief is that white cedar and bamboo are two materials that need to be grown and used a lot more in the trades. These materials are incredibly sustainable and beautiful.

I will definitely be doing more business with True North in the future.
